MEDICAL FRONT

Scientists in California may have taken a big step toward reversing Alzheimer's disease. With the onset of Alzheimer's comes the breakdown of essential brain fibers known axons. This is thought to cause the symptoms of the disease, and a lot of research has focused on ways to stop axons from breaking down. Now scientists from the University of California may have come up with a way to slow the breakdown and even restore the axons. The key to the process is a nerve growth factor.

The researchers injected special skin cells into the brains of monkeys, which age in much the same way human brains do. The skin cells had been altered to pump out the growth factor. Damaged neurons in the monkey's brains that were exposed to this growth factor were restored. The result was younger-looking brains, with lost connections restored.
