SC: The Red Cross suggests people get out in nature in order to heal the emotional wounds of Sept. 11. What do you think of that?

EH:I grew up in rural Oregon on the south coast, and I always talk to my mother -- she's in her middle '80s -- about how she was such a good parent. She says, "You guys raised yourselves, we just turned you loose into the woods." That's how we grew up, my brothers and myself, fishing and hunting and just being outside. That's where I do meditation. That's my soul space. To me the mountains, the wilderness…well, that's where I go for everything. That's my church. The great outdoors -- and the musings of Aldo Leopold and Muir and all these other people can be used for healing also.
