More WPA stories about Nebraska by Nebraskans

The financial services lobby has decided on a plan for Enron legislation in the Senate, so expect some new developments. The bankers, securities industry, and insurance agents are happy with the House bill, and now they're ready to hit the Senate. When the most powerful lobby groups in the business get together and agree on a plan, there's not much stopping them in Congress. As long as no one decides to grandstand, they feel they'll be successful in passing legislation that will be good for business and, they say, for the consumer…..Sen. Joseph Lieberman's wife, Hadassah, earned $328,000 last year on the speaking circuit, the Hartford Courant reports. She spoke to 21 groups last year "and earned $16,000 per speech for most of her appearances."….House GOP Conference Chairman J. C. Watts (R-OK), "furious over cancellation of the $11 billion Crusader program, boycotted a Capitol Hill appearance by President Bush  -- a highly visible snub by the fourth-highest ranking Republican in the House," Roll Call reports….KELO poll South Dakota U.S. Senate: Rep. John Thune (R) 46%, Sen. Tim Johnson (D) 42%... West Virginia voters approved a ban on hunting in every county but one on Sundays. The lone county did not have the measure on the primary ballot but is on the November ballot instead...According to Cook's Political Report, three states, with a combined 24 percent of the nation's population, have produced just three competitive seats! In fact, there are just as many competitive races in Iowa as there are in California, Illinois and Texas combined. Perhaps instructive is the fact that Iowa's maps were drawn by a nonpartisan redistricting bureau, which was instructed to ignore incumbents' residences or current districts, and to draw the lines and let the chips fall where they

may. But Iowa is the exception that proves the rule…. "These are gloomy days for moderate Republicans in Kansas," the Kansas City Star's Steve Kraske writes. "Stunning as this is for the faction that claims to be the dominant political power in the state, moderates don't have one of their own in the governor's race. Nary a single, 100 percent genuine, dyed-in-the-wool moderate bothered to file. It's been a long time -- if ever -- since the state GOP nominated a candidate as conservative as state Treasurer Tim Shallenburger (R). This could be the year." …Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation reported today that "a World War II patrol boat captained by U.S. President John F. Kennedy which was sunk by a Japanese destroyer has been found off the Solomon Islands," Reuters reports….No names have surfaced as a running mate for Democratic challenger Stormy Davis in his bid for Nebraska governor...Gov. Howard Dean (D) "has made up his mind" to run for president in 2004, the Rutland Herald reports….
