Howard Fineman has seen an advance copy of What Color Is A Conservative? by retiring Rep. J.C. Watts. (R-OK). In it, Watts "is blunt about the shortcomings of the GOP. The 'party of Lincoln,' he says, has adopted a 'robot-like allegiance to conservative views" ..Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), writes an op-ed in the New York Times calling for the resignation of SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt. ….In .Minnesota's Independence Party endorsed former Rep. Penny "pledged to take no special interest contributions, conduct no opinion polling, hire no political consultants and run no negative advertising." ….The Wall Street Journal runs a long overdue story: "Bush faces growing criticism for taking liberties to hide costs in the federal budget and circumvent Congress in the war against terrorism, even as he lectures corporate America about accounting practices." The AP notes that "the auditing problems at American companies cannot rival the bookkeeping shambles of the world's largest enterprise -- the U.S. government."…. an important observation: "Politicians fear nothing more than what they call an 'October Surprise,' a mid-autumn jolt that shapes voters' decisions at the polls. Ordinarily this fear is centered on foreign affairs. This year's fear is the October Surprise that will accompany the arrival of the third quarter 401(k) statements." ….Investor George Soros said that Harken Energy Corp. purchased a Texas oil company run by George W. Bush in 1986 soley for political influence, the Boston Globe reports. Soros owned nearly a third of Harken at the time the deal was made and told The Nation's David Corn "We were buying political influence. That was it. He (Bush) was not much of a businessman." ...Forest colored Army combat equipment is going to Georgia and coming out sand colored according to wire services….Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend (D-Md) is losing ground to her Republican opponent in the race for governor. Latest polls show her only 4 points ahead...
