Lacey was born in 1993. She spent 9 years in a cage. She lived a life of misery and deprivation. These photos were taken just after she was rescued by HUA. She was horribly depressed - staring blindly at the wall and barking. She's like an ancient person who just stares and doesn't know what is going on. The years of boredom drove her insane. When she was being groomed, she gave the groomer one little lick on the cheek, just barely, at the end of the grooming.
The groomer was heartbroken for her. She was covered with mats, had a raging skin infection and a respiratory infection. She also had dry eye and lost 9 teeth when they were cleaned.
Lacey was adopted by a family in Omaha who loves the ones who are in the most need. She got three weeks of love and comfort before she unexpectedly died of heart failure.
If you ever thought of buying a puppy in a pet store, stop for one moment and think about their parents - dogs like Lacey imprisoned in small cages enduring lives of deprivation and misery. Do not ever buy a puppy in a pet store.

Toby is a survivor. He comes from a home where there was an abusive person. He was abused and the woman and children were also abused. He came to HUA as part of our Tia's Place program that shelters dogs and cats for people in domestic abuse situations. Tia knew the horror of being abused by her family - she was beaten in the head with a baseball bat by the man who she loved. Tia lived at HUA for three years until she died of cancer. In her honor, Tia's Place was created. Toby is one of several pets who have come through Tia's Place. Toby's family is not able to come back and get him so he needs a new family that will love and protect him. He's a very devoted boy who loves attention. Toby is a Schnauzer who weighs about 21 pounds. He was born in 1995. He has been neutered and is current on health care.

What a guy! Tag was full of mud and burrs and tangles, plus some buckshot when he came to the shelter. His bones were poking through his skin. But he was hppy in no time at all, after clipping, a bath, a full tummy and lots of hugs. Now he likes to play with friends and loves all of the attention he can get from people. He lived in a home with a person who loved him but was unable to care for him. That's why he was in such bad shaped when he came to HUA. His person had to go to a nursing home. Tag clearly misses his home and wishes he had a person of his own. Tag is a poodle mix. Tag is about 13 pounds and is current on health care. He is an older fellow.

Maisey is a sweet, happy, enthusiastic girl. She is bright and beautiful. She is a Jack Russell Terrier and all that means. She is brilliant and active. She needs a person who is as smart as she is! Maisey is a young girl -she was born in 2002. She lost her home when her family had a human baby and didn't want her anymore. Sure hope they don't decide to dump the kid after a year too. Maisey is all heart. She loves everyone and everything and is thrilled to be involved with whatever is going on. She is very eager to learn and please. Maisey has been spayed and is current on healthcare

Major is a big goofy boy! He loves to roll in the grass, run, play with his stuffed purple dinosaur and give kisses to his favorite person. Major doesn't quite realize how big he is. He is just a big puppy. He loves to play tag and have his tummy rubbed. Major also loves to go for walks. He's great in the car. He has a wonderful happy personality. His favorite treat is peanutbutter. He knows to sit, stay, down, come and heel. Major is an American Bulldog who is about five years old. He weighs about 90 pounds.
