We don't know very much about George Bush's military excursion but here's what we do know:
He jumped ahead of 500 others waiting to get into this "champagne division" of the Texas National Guard. He claims he tried to go to Vietnam but his position was deemed too important to be shipped overseas. He claims to have transferred to the Alabama Guard to complete his obligation but there is no record of his attending meetings there. His military records were lost in a fire then months later found but missing any information to document his complete service. He doesn't remember anyone he met or "partied with" in Alabama. He doesn't remember any places he used to go in Alabama. He doesn't remember where he lived in Alabama. There are no military records of his pay in Alabama. Nobody has come forth to substantiate his existence in Alabama. The commanding officer of his unit doesn't remember ever seeing or hearing of Guardsman Bush. A reward offered by 10 Alabama Air National Guard members in 1999 to anyone who can provide proof of Bush's military duty during his supposed time in Alabama is still unclaimed.
So there are many legitimate military questions the Kerry campaign could ask if the Bush operatives continue to try and sully the reputation of a multiple medal winner in Vietnam. Team Bush's theory--and it's worked before-- is throw enough mud and some will stick. Until the voters shout loud and clear they want to hear ideas on their future like health care, jobs, social security and the like will the mud throwers halt their lies long enough for the real issues to get attention.
