CHILDREN (CONT)

criminal justice costs, and higher future economic productivity.

The past four years have not been kind to American children. More children have fallen into poverty, and are uninsured. We've chosen wealth over health. The rich have gotten tax cuts and children have gotten budget cuts. We've reduced the fiscal burdens on this generation only to raise them on future generations. We've rejected the notion, central to the idea of economic progress, that the next generations should have better living standards than enjoyed by the present generation.

All great faiths call for the protection of the poor and the vulnerable. We have a special convenant to protect and care for our children. Promises made four years ago of compassionate conservatism have not been met with deeds of compassion for America's children. Asked whether they're better off than four Novembers ago, in my humble opinion most children would say no.
