History has shown repeatedly that any party that controls a government for a long period of time falls into the comfortable corruption trap. That's exactly where the GOP finds itself today.
Its majority leader, Tom DeLay, never one for being bashful about his wants and needs, is being examined back home in Texas by a grand jury. Texas politics and corruption being what it is, in the final analysis DeLay may have little to worry about. However, with this sweeping House rule change, aside from being convicted and hauled off to prison, DeLay certainly has nothing to worry about in continuing to run roughshod over his Republican brethren in the House.
Members of Congress should be held to the highest standards, not the lowest. That is where we find ourselves today in the halls of Congress, holding our representatives to the lowest common denominator and shrugging our collective shoulders.
