lous but relentless efforts to drill for a little oil in the pristine Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to send down a pipeline it would take 10 years to build to supposedly alleviate high gas prices now.
So the farmers are repaid for their support by gutting farm programs.
But that's not the worst of it, not by far.
The compassionate conservative resident of the White House and his trusty companions want to carve off pieces of the budget flesh in nutrition programs.
Congressional Republicans are getting behind their leader's slogan of "compassionate conservatism" by gutting nutrition programs. Currently one in every five children in America go to bed hungry each night. Bush and the GOP majorities want to cut the Food Stamp program. Not only is that food program due for huge cuts but also Head Start which in some cases provides the only meal a child gets in a day.
So with one swift swing of the budget cutting axe both farmers and children are recipients of Bush's strange sort of priorities. Billions for missiles that don't work and trips to Mars while family farmers struggle and children go hungry. That's the legacy of compassionate conservatism.
