wasn't just hearsay because when a formal complaint was filed with the state Ombudsman's Office it was revealed this caseworker had a history of complaints filed against her, all having similarities. To say she had a large file at the Office of the Ombudsman would be an understatement.
In the private sector such a history of incompetence would not be tolerated. In the world of Nebraska Health and Human Services she was not only not disciplined for her behavior she was promoted to the position of a supervisor while still carrying a partial caseload. That's the kind of state employee regularly unleashed on the public by HHS.
In another case I became aware of a 13 year old girl was beaten with a coat hanger by her abusive mother. The child was covered with welts. HHS got involved. Nothing happened. The girl was not removed from the home. The abuse was so great the teenager has run away from home and now lives with her cousin.
And so the state marches on.
These examples of HHS ineptitude only serve to underline the handling of this pregnancy. A thirteen year old should not be coerced one way or the other.
So to all those right wingers out there, remember when someone says they are pro choice that means they support a woman's right to choose -- whatever the decision. Wrong is wrong no matter which side of the issue a decision falls. For a pro choice advocate not to fight just as hard when a woman is coerced into an abortion against her will is a betrayal to the tenets we espouse.
