September 15, 2005 Dear Editor: The following letter was written by Richard Theone to the Honorable U. S. Senator Chuck Hagel BEFORE the war in Iraq was started. As of today, Richards predictions have all come true.
November 1, 2002 The Honorable Chuck Hagel 346 Russell Senate Office Building Washington, D. C.
Dear Senator Hagel : Your letter and enclosure of October 17 were appreciated. The logical was thoughtful but arguable.
Your vote supporting H. J. Res. 114 was predictable.
As I see it from the perspective of many years, a preemptive strike against Iraq would be tantamount to putting one's hand into a hornets' nest.
Like it or not, Saddam Hussein is the duly elected president of a sovereign nation, and should be respected as such.
2. Like it or not, Saddam Hussein is the only leader in the region who can hold the tribes of Iraq together as a nation.
3. Like it or not Iraq sits on top of the world's third largest energy reserve.
4. Like it or not, Israel, through Senator Lieberman, is a prime mover of a war with Iraq.
5. Like it or not, democracy and western culture are not necessarily attractive to the Moslem world.
6. Like it or not, the arrogance of superpower presence in the Persian Gulf is not welcome.
Acting out the provisions of H. J. Res. 114 may very well ignite a world-wide wave of terrorism against western society that is beyond the reach of smart men and their smart bombs.
Violence to end violence is endless. Apparently you in Congress have yet to learn that.
Sincerely, Richard C. Thoene Nebraska
