Of course, the recommendations of the panel of doctors, nurses, health care professionals, business leaders and workers are apt to be ignored by this Congress because they have been busy in this election year.
The average congressman may have been too busy what with flitting from one cocktail party fundraiser to another hosted by one special interest group or another. When not depositing campaign checks congressmen have been busy saving the sanctity of marriage by debating constitutional amendments prohibiting gays from marriage. Thank the Republican Senate leadership for all those wasted days. And while we're on the subject of constitutional amendments let's not forget another priority issue, flag burning. The incident of one flag burning every decade or so surely merits more time debating an amendment to our constitution than does trying to fix something as trivial as health care. Thanks again, Senator Frist and the Republican majority.
So you can see why health care just hasn't been addressed when all these other priorities have been nagging at the congressional leadership. So while congress has been feverishly cutting taxes for millionaires, spending our great grandchildren into debt and cutting services for the poorest of the poor it is obvious why health care for all Americans --especially the 46 million who are now without insurance-- is near bottom on the list of things to do. Besides, the 46 million people without health care probably don't vote and almost certainly don't contribute to campaigns.
Recent studies showing Americans pay twice as much on health care as do Canadians or the British but are only half as healthy point out the dismal failure of our broken system and the need for an alternative in our society.
Americans should be screaming this from the tops of their lungs, if healthy enough to do so, that is.
